Walk Programme

Sat 19 Aug 2017: PANGBOURNE, GORING CIRCULAR (11miles)

The walk starts from Pangbourne Station and takes us across the Thames via a tollbridge to Whitchurch and then up the Thames Path to the picturesque village of Goring, passing underneath one of Brunel's famous railway bridges on the way. Our return journey will be through woods and farmland, following part of the Southern Extension of the Chiltern Way.

Choice of cafe or picnic lunch in Goring or pub lunch across the Thames in the nearby village of Streatley.

Pangbourne Railway Station, Shooters Hill, Pangbourne, Berkshire. Pangbourne is on the train route from Reading to Oxford. There is a car park at Pangbourne Station. The cost for parking is £2.90 per day. Should this car park be full, parking is available at the Station Road Pay and Display Car Park or one of the other car parks in Pangbourne. There is also some free parking in local streets.

11 miles. Generally reasonable walking conditions. Moderate pace.


Unreccied walk heading along the Greensand Way passed Brook, Sandhills and Wormley before heading to Witley for lunch. Return via Witley Common and passed Thursley Lake. 12 miles approx.

Walk across pleasant fields and farmland, ascending up on to the lower slopes of Blackdown Hill passing under The Temple of the Winds and gaining magnificent views of the Sussex Weald. Later we visit the winery on the way back to Lurgashall to sample their honey meads and fruit liqueurs.
Tea, coffee and cakes are also available here. Return to the 16th century Noah’s Ark village pub for a late afternoon drink.

Public car park at the junction of the A246 and B2122, Leatherhead. Entrance off the roundabout towards Bocketts Farm but at the top of the hill.

Distance and Terrain:

12.5 miles. Reasonably quick pace, hilly, with some steep ups and downs. No dogs please.

Sat 26 Aug 2017: ISLE OF WIGHT A GREAT DAY OUT (10miles)

From Brading Station we follow the picturesque Bembridge Trail to the windmill where we will have light refreshments then we follow farmland trails to steadily climb up Culver Down. We'll lunch at the Culver Haven Inn or picnic if you prefer. At this beauty spot there are stunning views over the sea and back across to the mainland. Then it's on to the Roman Villa where well take afternoon tea and cakes. From there we head South to Sandown, where we will have fish and chips on the beach afterwards returning by Island train to Ryde Pier Head for the passenger ferry to Portsmouth.

Travel suggestions
Trains run from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour Station where there is a short walk to the passenger ferry to Ryde. We suggest you obtain a return rail ticket to Sandown which includes the ferry cost (remember on the outgoing journey get off at Brading).
Alternatively park your car at Gun Wharf Quays car park -Portsmouth postcode PO1 3TZ - £8 all day parking for ferry passengers.

Catch the 10.15am passenger ferry to Ryde from the end of the railway station.

Return Ferry costs:£19 or £14.20 for seniors
Group Discount at £17 is available for 10 or more passengers but please note that's after excluding seniors and requires the group to travel out and back on the same ferry.
IOW trains costs: Ryde to Brading £3.20 Sandown to Ryde £3.90. You can get a reduction using a rail card

6 miles. Moderate pace. Terrain undulating but nothing too difficult. Can be muddy after rain.

Wed 30 Aug 2017: BOX HILL AND NEW RIVER MOLE WALK (6miles)

This walk led by Tony includes a section along the River Mole and across Boxhill for fine views, dragon's teeth and a piano man's folly.
At first a level walk along the Mole including the recently opened picturesque pathway past Pixham. We take one of the more gentle ascents up Boxhill, then descending through some wonderful old trees and back to Ryka's

We walk firstly in the morning from the Medicine garden then after lunch we go to Painshill Park where as it is Heritage Day entry will be free and we will do a further walk. Fuller details to follow on this nearer the date.

Medicine Garden

Distance and Terrain:

6 miles. leisurely pace on the level


10.15 am for morning walk.
We walk along the towpath of the Wey & Arun Canal to the Devil's Hole Lock. This is where we leave the canal to walk through Hurst Wood, Pephurst Wood and Jenkin's Wood to Drungewick Aqueduct. We rejoin the canal to walk back to the car park.

2pm for afternoon walk
We follow the Wey & Arun Canal towpath to Gennets Bridge. Parts of the canal is in disrepair. At Rosemary Lane we turn around to cross the Sussex Border to end passing Loxwood village shop/Post Office.
If you do the morning walk you might be able to have a canal boat trip instead of doing the afternoon walk.
No Dogs.

Wed 20 Sep 2017: WARFIELD'S NORTHERN LANES (7miles)

This is a fairly gentle walk through fields and country paths with some really pretty views of the Berkshire countryside. This walk also includes walking down Ashmore Lane, reputed to be one of the prettiest lanes in the borough.

Please take a few moments to read these important notes.

  • Non-members are welcome to attend up to three walks before being requested to join the Ramblers.
  • Ramblers members are welcome on all walks.
  • There is no need to book in advance, just turn up unless the programme specifically requests walkers to contact the walk leader prior to the walk.
  • If, exceptionally a walk has to be cancelled or altered the walk programme will be adjusted and a message will be posted on the Home Page.
  • You should bring appropriate clothing including waterproofs when rain is forecast as well as appropriate footwear. The walk leader may not allow walkers not suitably dressed to participate in the walk.
  • Please ensure that you arrive in plenty of time and that you are ready to start walking at the time shown in the walk programme.
  • Please let the walk leader know if you plan to leave the walk before the end or if you wish to take a comfort break.
  • As a rule of thumb assume a walking speed of 2 to 2.5 miles per hour to calculate how long a walk will take. This is dependant on the number of walkers and the difficulties.
  • All walkers walk at their own risk.
  • SABRE members may bring a dog on a walk subject to prior agreement of the walk leader. The walk leaders instructions must be followed at all times, please refer to the SABRE Dog Policy for further details.
  • Assistance Dogs are welcome on all walks, please check with the walk leader the suitability of the walk for dogs.
